Help! - Antifreeze Type
Instead of Mercedes Brand Antifreeze - my friendly mechanic uses Pentosin 001100 Blue imported from Germany and is used as factory antifreeze for Audi. I went to their website and got all the info about their antifreeze but they do not list anything about PH level. Anyone know if it is approved for Mercedes?? This stuff ain't cheap at $10.US per litre. Please advise.

good one Cap'n - but seriously - my research shows that MB antifreeze has a PH of 6.5 whereas NA antifreeze has a PH of 9.5-10.5 which affects the lifespan of plastic parts and hoses. I know that in NA there is no other approved antifreeze other than MB brand. In Europe (where Pentosin is made) there are apparently 6-8 other brands that are approved for use in MB's. Anyone in Europe know if Pentosin is approved.

I'm probably gonna regret this but here goes; proper PH is 8.5. Anything above 11 and the coolant attacks aluminum and copper parts. Anything below 7 and the ferrous metals try to return to ore. (rust) I have never heard of plastics being affected by PH. That's one reason they're used to hold products that have extreme PH on either end of the scale, i.e. acid and soda. Also keep in mind that if you put in 8.5 PH anti-freeze and mix in water that isn't neutral, you undid everything you were trying to do.
