Holy cr@p -- rear wheel bearing play w124
I replaced all the dogbone arms in the rear, much better now. At 226k there's a lot more to be done.
When putting on the passenger side rear wheel I noticed a LOT of play. The brake rotor/wheel move quite a lot when you grab the wheel at 12&6. I have felt bad bearings before but this feels almost like the axle nut is loose? Is that even possible. It drives fairly well and I haven't noticed the typical wheel bearing groan/roar. Wtf is that wheel so loose for? Very concerned as I put 500miles a week on it and I do my best to look out for problems before they leave me stranded or in an unsafe situation. This will probably be a job for the Indy either way. |

Apparently, in the past, this wheel bearing nut was not installed with the degree of snugness it should have been? What is more important is that you are savvy enough to do the tire-grabbing exercise, and noticed the loose situation! -Something we all should do when our car's suspensions are up in the air.

Well after further investigation it looks like the axle nut has cracked. It is missing a pizza pie sized chunk. This may be due to the under torquing or mileage I don't know. I'm probably just going to drive to work real slow tomorrow, thankfully the dealership is only 3 blocks from work.
As long as its not a $100 nut! |

The bearing is about $95. This is the next job on my mother's 300TE, left rear has been done. Right rear is next. Heard it's a PITA to do.

Confirmed its the wheel bearing. It must be toast because there's a ton of play, the wheel rocks back and forth pretty bad. The weird thing is that it's not noisy while driving, but i can feel the wheel wandering, not sure if maybe the lowered and sport suspension (along with all new rear arms) had masked the bearing failure. It's been like this for at least 10-15k unfortunately. The carrier may also be toast. Cant take the chance of tearing it apart and needing a new carrier. It's my only mode of transportation.
It's the same cost to buy a used one from the picknpull as it is on eBay so I will probably grab the eBay carrier/hub and have a new bearing pressed in, it's also a good opportunity to replace the lower control arm bushing in the spindle. Then it's just a simple days work of easy r&r and all the hard work is done! Until then driving very slowly. |

The left rear wheel bearing on my W123 took a dump on me a few months ago. The repair was lengthy and unpleasant. I don't know if it's the same on a W124, but if it is, budget a full weekend for it. Or just farm it out if you can afford it.
