Grinding Noise

I have a MB 1989 300SEL. Today several times it made a "grinding" noise on acceleration after a stop. It sounded like I had run over a trig and it was being drug under the car. Is there something I can check or eliminate before a trip to the mechanic. My husband says he thinks it also "jumps a little" going into first. HELP?
