What Parts Are Needed For 8km Bumper?

Hi guys,

I am wondering if any of you guys had imported a MB into Canada from US and changed the bumpers to 8 km spec.?

Did you have to change the bumper covers as well? I been told I need only the stryoform behind the bumper covers. But MB of Canada told me I need different covers as well and they have to install them ( sounds like a sale job to me ).

Confused

Since Ronald Regan the US requires only 2.5mph bumpers & as far as I know only BMW & Honda still build their bumpers to the old 5mph standard.

IS RHR FOAM INSIDE YOUR US BUMPERS?

Hi MB DOC

Have you taken your bumper covers off before? Is there foam between the frame and the covers?

Thanks

Every model car has different requirements to comply with Transport Canada's regulations.

You should call Transport Canada first if you haven't already done so to find out what other modifications are necessary to bring the US spec car to Candian standards. They have a toll free number. I'll get it for you if you don't find it.

Mercedes Benz Canada will try to sell you thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars worth of unnesessary parts and labour and do their best to convince you that they are the only ones qualified and permitted to do the job. It's not true! Don't believe them.

Whatever you do, don't get persuaded into buying a new bumper cover. The material behind the bumpers is different for Canada and the US , that is true. So what you have to do is find out all the different part numbers between the US model and the Canadian model and buy those parts. They can be used parts if you wish. Remember, the inspection can only be carried out by Canadian Tire (not Mercedes or anyone else) and they don't know anything about Mercedes. All you have to do is show them a receipt that the work has been carried out and away you go. They don't take apart your bumpers to check.

I was going to send a BMW 850CSi to Canada and I went through all this before. They told me that the bumpers needed to be replaced because they didn't conform to Canadian standards, and to make a long story short, there was no bumper differences betwen the Canadian and US model 8series (other than the front bumper spoiler which was too low on the CSi). So what I had to do was change the springs to lift the ride height and then the car would pass the inspection. Canadian Tire said that they would even put the original CSi springs back on for me right after the inspection.

The problem is Politics and the rules don't make sense. I have many stories I can tell you and even more information to back it all up. Just let me know how I can help.

By the way, Mercedes Benz Canada will be more than happy to assist you in any way to send cars from Canada to the US....;)
Do you get it now...

Yeah, when my Euro W126 was shipped to the US from Germany, all that was done to the bumpers was to reinforce them somehow. Same, nice short euro bumper covers. I would have killed someone had they stuck those awful swollen US bumpers on there.
