1987 560sel Getting a CLUNK!

Hey crew, i need some help asap! My 560sel, from a stand still if i drive forward a few feet and apply the brakes i am getting a clunk that sounds like it is coming from the front. Once i stop and go in revers i also get a clunk. Just replaced the steering gear box thinking that was the issue, i had the tie rods checked and all of those parts were good. This is now at the shop for the third time trying to locate this issue. I feel like it is a mount but i have not been under the car. Any one seen this before? Thank you.

Have someone drive the car while you watch the front wheel. Have them move forward and then stop quickly. Then backup up and stop quickly. If you see the wheel move forward or backward in relation to the car, then the Guide Rod Mounts are bad. Now do the other side of the car the same. This problem us usually not obvious when just looking and prying.

Just a thought.

The W126 chassis, 560SEL, is known for guide rod bushing and lower ball joint "clunk" noise. Those are the two most common failure front end parts from my experience.
Both are a pretty simple repair.

Have you considered the driveshaft center support bearing? If that is the culprit, replace both flex discs at the same time.
