WalMart Battery RIP 1997-2013
Got in the '86 420SEL last week and planned to drive it around some. Alas, no crank due to a low battery so I got the charger out and it started fine the next day after work. The next day, no crank again. Diagnosis: the old battery finally quit.
Proof that a WalMart battery can perform fine. It never leaked and the terminals never showed any corrosion. I bought another WalMart battery and she's back on duty.

I've also had really good battery luck with my 126. I believe it's partly due to the cool location between the firewalls, and the physical size of the battery used in these cars, and using batteries that can replinished with water occasionally. I've gotten 7 years each out of 3 Autozone standard Duralast batteries. My other cars with batteries mounted in the engine compartment and sealed caps die in 3-4 years at best in the Texas heat.

I think you're right: the heat gets 'em.
I had a 2000 Buick LeSabre which had the battery under the back seat; bet it would last but I did not keep the car long enough to find out.
