New engine
 

Hi

How much could I expect to pay for a good 300E 24v engine,and would it fit in to a 230E chassis,Iv'e been looking very closlely at the owners manual (for the dimensions) & the Haynes manual for tech stuff.Both cars are exactly the lengh/width/hight,obviously the 300 is slightly heavier,theres a slight diffirence in max oil pressures the 230E being 8.5 bar (approx) and the 300E 12.0 bar,I put that down the oil pump on the 300,or is there something else?.
Also that transmission looks very similar too,or am I missing something,I take it that the engine mounts are diffirent in the bay (or are they),and if there,how diffirent?,like I say is this posible,I know there would be quite alot of work in doing this,any help/advise on this matter will be greatly apprecaited thanks.
The cheapest one of those Iv'e seen is £4500,and thats a 90',I'd just like the challenge.

What I meant to say also,is that mine is a 89' 124 model.

I would need the coil off the 300 too,I know that,but is there anything else off the wiring that I would need.
Or is the 230E just a bit to diffirent for this kind of conversion,any help/info in greatly appreciated.

The 3.0 liter in-line 6 cylinder engine was the most popular engine installed in that chassis in the US. Most W124 autos here have that engine, or the smaller 6-cylinder engine installed in the US so I do not doubt the engine will fit. How difficult the swap might be is another story and I can offer no insight into that problem or the issue of cost. Good luck with the effort though. Jim

I just noted you were looking at the 24 valve engine, which I believe was installed in the later W124 models over here. There was a body style change or upgrade at about that time, which may have made the engine space and mounting arrangement better suit the 24 valve engine. Once again, I think you can find the room, but how difficult the job will be in the details is beyond my experience. Good Luck, Jim

Cheers for that Jim,I'm not sure what to do,y'see I'd write to the forum here,but all they say is save up and buy the car.
I allready said to one company saying I just wanted the price of an engine and they couldn't even do that!.
I think some people here would rather go out and buy the car,well I would if I could,hence mentioning all this conversion stuff,like I say I'll see I get on know,thanks anyway.

Almost all 300E's sold in the U.S. were six cylinders, with the vast majority the 12 valve SOHC 3.0 liter engine. None of the sedans had the 24 valve 3.0 liter engine. Some of the W124's had a 2.6 liter engine, and more had the 2.8 liter engine. There were no four cylinder W124's sold in the U.S.

Only the Coupes got a 24 valve DOHC version of the 3.0 liter engine, and that was from 1990-1992.

A 24 valve DOHC 3.2 liter engine (M104) was used in all 6 cylinder W124 sedans, coupes, wagons, and convertibles from 1993-1995.
