Chasing Hi NO smog

Walker has some good tips. Makes sense.
I have a cap certificate for smog repair but hardly any shops will touch it.
I also have alot of concerns by handing over my beast to any smog tech.

WALKERŪ EXHAUST SYSTEMS :: Check Emissions Using Gas Analyzer
  • High HC emissions indicate unburned fuel.
  • High CO levels indicate partially burnt fuel, or oil.
  • High NOx levels are normally caused by high combustion temperatures and pressures, slightly lean AFR, and excessively advanced ignition timing.
  • Tailpipe emissions readings low in HC and CO levels with high NOx emissions are typically NOT caused by a defective converter. The low HC and CO readings indicate that the converter is functioning. The root cause of the problem is an engine which is emitting excessively high NOx emissions. These high NOx emissions may reduce the durability and efficiency of the converter.
If we look at smog as a window into the engine
we can try to allow it to make the engine run better.

over 4 years ago I believe the car was leaned by a smog tech
but I am not sure to pass it.
They advised having my mech correct it.

I brought it to my mechanic & he said leave it alone so in 2 years it would pass.

I am doubting that advise could be good for the engine.

Maybe it wasn't lean?

I tried the press down on the plate thru the fd tower & I have to press down alot to get it to slow.

I think slowing means rich?

Maybe I was running lean because of a vac leak & maybe now I am tightening it up so now its rich?

What about an exhaust leak near converter or before or after?
So possible on my old pipes.

They are low & sometimes they scrape going over steep driveways

Looking at it I think its a leak situation
still have some hard to change major rubber hoses on manifold & under FD.

????

I still have to check if killing the idle adj kills the engine...if not could be problem there or a close leak.

Other thing I have to check into is Dist cap looks still new but when I reinstalled it a small piece of plastic came off underneath on engine side.
Guess its probaly part of the lock down but wonder if it could compromise the security of the cap. It feels secure????

Oh, just too hot here 100's to be doing this so have to wait til weather b reaks.

She does run a tad hot

My mechanic also never worried about that though is concerns me.
It will go 95 100C in hottest weather.

I still would like to see 80C & other thing is I still have to figure out why my econ guage is not pinned left at idle in park....probably some vac leak???

I need to change a 5 way hose in front on fuse box location
have not sourced any more than a 4 way.

So point me to that peach parts...

Phew

Anyway any advice is appreciated.

My car was equiped with a engine preheat...
its now disconnected?
Would it have had any elements that lead into engine?

Ribbed tubing under neath

I would suppose it might if it needed to preheat the engine.

Perhaps it was not removed correctly & there is an opening left somewhere????

That could create a leak...
