1993 500E Air Conditioner issues
About a week ago my a/c compressor started to squeak slightly. But it worked fine and I had planed to make a repair within the near future.
Today, I had no response from my Climate Control. No fan. So I have no air flow. If the car is moving I can feel slight air flow. Question is.... Did my compressor "conk out"? And if it did would it also affect my climate control fan speed? Yes, the fuses have been checked. They look fine. Actually, according to the manual the climate control shares the fuse with other amenities. Please help. It's getting to hot in San Francisco. Today it got up to 73*. Burning up in The City Miguel |

Try to turn the very "center" part of the a/c compressor pulley. If it won't turn then the compressor is locked up. You will hear the squeeking when the compressor is on the early stages of locking up (or any other rotating part on the front of the engine) but that can also be caused by the tensioner/belt being worn too.

I dont think compressor failure would cause a shutdown of the entire HVAC system. If there was an issue with the compressor, (assuming they still used it) the Klima relay should have shutdown the compressor.

Maybe the belt is slipping and caused the rpm sensor to trip the system? Usually it resets when you cycle the ignition key.

The car has a metal fuse in the engine department just for the A/C fan motor. It looks like casket and you have to flip it open. On the drivers side area.

Step One: remove negative battery cable (safety and engine computer reset)
Step two: replace strip fuse in little plastic casket, that is solely for fan function. Step three: pull Klima relay and check for corrosion on contacts, clean, replace. -if there is corrosion, that's definitely the problem, if not, it could still be, but the compressor, speed sensor, and freon levels need to be checked to specs If you still get no response from HVAC blower, search forum for "Brian Carlton Blower circuit" and begin diagnostics. Blower operation has nothing to do with compressor operation from a failure perspective. Mercedes makes these cars to fail safely. Blower is needed in winter for defrost, which is why your vacuum modules for the windscreen vents fail in the open position. Unless there is a wiring harness or push button unit failure, these two problems are most likely unrelated.
