Help !!!! Half Shaft (cv Joint) Boot Ripped

I have a 81 280TE with a ripped cv boot on the right half shaft. I need to know where I can get one and if it is a DIY job (and any tools needed)

CV Joint Rubber boot

Hi,

The rubber boots replacemente is not a DIY job unless you get hold of the beading tool. The metal sleeves need to be replaced by a special cutting tool and then use the beading tool to cimp in the new one. These tools are very espensive and not readily available on local garages. Your best bet is to get either new shaft or used ones. Hope this is of some help.

torn half shaft boot

Replacing the original boot on MBZ very difficult because of the crimped bands involved. I know it might seem like heresy but I could swear that I saw one of those split ones in the J.C. Whitney catalog. I say this because I was very surprised to find that they carried anything for MBZ. Check out their website, I'm sure that's where I saw it. If you do find it there post a thread for everyone.

Torn boot

I was right. Went to J.C. Whitney and checked. Part number is 712X0185T for MBZ '73-'82 costs $15.95. If you go this way, let us know how they work. If they're good, maybe fastlane will carry. At this price, it's certainly worth a try given the alternative of a new half shaft.

I will give the Split boot a try as I need to get through tax time before I spend any more money on my car
