W124 dash lights out
Dimmed my cluster a few days ago. This morning no cluster, radio, or console lights. Dimmer makes no change. Fuses good under hood. Is there a fuse or voltage regulator on back of the cluster, and if so how hard is it to get to?

Turn the dimmer knob back and forth at least 25 times. If it still no work then you need to replace the dimming switch itself or by pass it.
|
I've seen the solder break on the dimmer itself, can get to it as easily as pulling the cluster and is held in with one screw, you can resolder if you want to try that, if you are good with a soldering gun.

A low wattage soldering iron works much better. MB seems to use the same pot from at least 79 to 92 that I have physically seen. They do break and they sure do corrode.
Worst case, pop your instrument cluster and clean the dimmer pot where you can see it. In a 93, you will have to loosen your speedo cable to get the cluster out. |
IF IT IS A LOOSE CONNECTION AT THE BACK OF THE DIMMER SWITCH YOU DONī'T EVEN HAVE TO SOLDER IT, JUST BEND IT SO IT MAKES A LITTLE PRESURE AT THE PLACE WHERE IT MAKES CONTACT ANT IT WORKS FINE. I JUST MADE THIS REPAIR IN MY 1990 300E.
