gasket sealer

i am about to replace the valve cover gasket on the old 190e. it has an epansion plug in the front of the cover and i was wondering about the use of rtv sealer. i asked the dealer for sealer and they told me just to use permetex hot rtv.

i know i am going to use it on the expansion plug but was wonder if i can or should use it for the rest of the gasket. i'm not too worried about the top of the gasket, it is a male gasket which fits into the female valve cover, it is the bottom which is flat. should i use a small amount of sealer between the gasket and the head?

thanks in advance for your help

If it is rubber gasket that is in good condition (tight fit, pliable, etc.) then you do not need sealer on it (you may want to use sealer to "glue" the gasket to the valve cover so it stays on the valve cover when you remove it later). I have used Permatex Ultra Copper for years and like it a lot - use the least amount possible (a little goes a long way) to prevent excess squeeze out.

Good Luck!
Tom
