the M104s are returning

I read a Mercedes article that said the beloved inline 6's would return soon.Of course as aluminum alloy. They say there now cheaper to build than the v6s.Look for hoods to get a little longer.

I hope they figure out how to design a head gasket that doesn't leak.

Interesting article. Good to see.
All the great MB engines- 6 cyl- were straight.
BMW is right not to go V.
I always thought the V's were a compromise to space saving.
Maybe they'll get rid of those plastic engine covers too so we can see that glorious engine set up.

you have to understand that the plastic is for the lawyers, doctors, or business people who don't want to see the engine... they just want to see something beautiful....

Thanks for the Google link. My searches on Mercedes and M104 headed me down all the familiar rabbit holes.

But engines ARE beautiful. To some of us anyway.

wouldn't engine covers retain more heat? Like I used to have hot under hood temps, till I wrapped my exhaust with fiberglass tape.

I am glad to see this. I've always liked the smooth power of my inline six 103 compared to the v-6 in the 210. Yes, the 210 is faster, but the inline is so smooth. Really quiet and reassuring.

Not only are straight sixes known for their inherent smoothness, but they tend to produce more torque. Also, with a straight 6 you don't need a counter rotating balance shaft to make the engine feel smooth. Also if they wanted to put a turbo on it, there would be more room for it.

I loved my M103's smoothness, but my brother's M112 is a superior motor....at over 150k it still runs smooth and has awesome power and economy. I do await some new I6 engines though, hopefully some diesels too!
