leaking trans pan gasket
 

I have a question regarding the transmission pan. I have a leak in the gasket are that I can't seem to stop. I have replaced the gasket several times to no avail. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can use to try and stop the leak, I thought about sealing it with silicone RTV but am not sure if that will cause other problems. I assume its coming from the gasket interface as I don' notice any above that area. ken

I replaced the transmission pan gasket and filter 6 months ago and there was no leak.

The car is still running fine and there is no leak at all.

The trick is not to tighten the bolts too much. Here is what I did
last time. I tightened the bolts not too tight initially and tested drive the car to check the leak.

I kept tightening the bolts until there was no leak.

i believe there is a sequence in tightening bolts. i saw my
mechanic doing this. all must be torque to specs.

thanks but i did exactly that, i tightened the gasket on the pan per the sequence in the manual or the way i would do head bolts, and i didn't try and tighten them all the way to the specified torque but in stages. i guess i have to try it again and see if i have better luck. i thought someone would have some sorta special sealant i could use. thanks again. ken

No gasket sealer is used, nor necessary. The seal is soft and pliable and easily nicked. Are you sure the pan is flat, not tweaked in any direction? Also, is the tranny is overfull, the fluid can come out the vent or other seals and look like the pan gasket is leaking.

Also, on both the 4.5 and the 560, I had to kind of milk the gasket to get a proper fit, then quickly get the pan up to the tranny before the gasket had a chance to move. Been in the 4.5 twice and the 560 once and no leaks from either.

Also, be sure you didn't accidentally mount the pan backwards. The 560 pan has one side taller than the other due to the way the tranny case is designed. If the bottom of the pan isn't parallel to the ground, chance are it is on backwards.
