C280 Console Removal
Can anyone tell me how to remove the console (or just the window switch panel around the shifter) in my 96 C280. I have removed the screws in the console storage box, but can't find what else is holding it down. Thanks.

I haven't done this so I cannot describe the amount of force needed, but you need to be careful, using a thin plastic screwdriver or tool pry up the plastic piece surrounding the gear selector lever. There are two clips on each side. Use a rag to protect area. The center console is also held in by two clips both side, I think you go through the center aperature to reach in to release the clips.

Having just done this to my C230, I found that a thin, soft credit card (my grocery store's savings card) came in handy. It's strong enough for the job but is not too stiff. First gently lift up the plastic around the shifter and then the wood console itself. The trick is to slip the card under each surface and slowly, carefully lift up. Holding the cup holder half open gave me nice access to the wood console. Good luck.

Yup, remove the (pull out) the black plastic shift surround, and then the wood peice of the console can be pulled up by pulling up the FRONT of it.
Good luck.

1994 C280 Console
I also may have to remove my console using this same method. Good information, those grocery cards are actually good for something.
![]() Anyone know a good source for that console part or a part number? The woodgrain around the shift knob, windows switches, and mirror adjust has several cracks in it. It's the only rough part on the interior and I like to replace it. Should I just keep an eye on E-Bay? |

just to BS a little,
I guess on such a recent car it is probably cheaper and easier to replace the wood. But I read a great article in Mercedes Benz Classic about these restorers who can refinish the thin surfaces of these wood trim pieces and the look and match is fantastic. |
