300te leaking rear windows: Replace or re seal?

My 93 300te is leaking at the rear windows. From my research, it seems to be a common problem.

Any expirence out there that can tell me whether to bite the bullet and buy new seals, or have any of you had good luck with slapping some sealer in there? Any tricks?


I plan on removing the windows one way or the other.

Anybody ever try good old silicone?

If you plan to remove the windows it only makes sense to replace the seals. Recommend buying MB seals that that are high quality, durable and will seal properly.

The current seals look perfect. It really seems to me that the seals had some sort of design error versus just failing. They dont look shrunk, cracked, nothing. I have the fear that the new seals will look exactly like my current ones.

I dont want to spend $400 on 2 new seals if they are just going to leak again in 5 years.

Not meaning to hijack your question. Can anyone shed light on how to remove the rear window? I only see one screw that secures the trim. Will I have to go to body shop to have them remove it? I have some rust surfacing beneath the seal and need to grind away the bad metal.

If there any auto glass specialists in your area contact them to see if they have the type of sealant that can be pumped into the gasket. I think it is a non-silicone based product called butyl rubber. I am not an expert on this but believe an auto glass shop will be familiar with the product. Read somewhere that silicone sealers can cause rust???
