BAS/ASR light - '99 E320 Wagon
Hey guys,
So I have a BAS/ASR light on. After reading some of the other posts on this, it seems fairly common. However, I can't seem to find where anyone else experienced the exact same thing as me and thought someone might offer some specific guidance on mine..... It goes off after every time I shut the car off. After driving for about 5 minutes, it will come on and just says BAS on the digital readout on the dash. It doesn't come on when I get up to any certain speed and does it randomly, so I wouldn't think it's a speed sensor. It also never happens when I press the brake pedal either, so I also wouldn't think it's the brake switch. So I got a used control module and swapped it out to see if that was the problem. After swapping I drove it twice with no light coming on and thought that fixed it, but it came back again.... I ordered a brake switch and will swap that out just to see if it's possibly related to that, but I don't think it is. Everything also feels and drives fine.... And words of wisdom for me here? Thanks in advance guys!

While there are a handful of possibilities, I would concur with swapping the brake light switch. Hopefully you ordered a genuine MB one, the aftermarket ones are generally not great for this part.
The alternative is to drop several times the cost of the switch to have SDS plugged in and see what's triggering it. Thus, that's why I'd start with the BLS as well. It may turn out to be wheel sensor, or perhaps the grooves in a hub are impacted with crud, which is not that uncommon. I clean mine very well every time I replace pads, and they are always pretty dirty. Good luck, I hope it's the BLS. Easy and cheap. |

When you say you changed the control module, what exactly did you change?
If the brake light switch doesn't help, could be you have a problem similar to the one I had. In my case, the problem was with the ABS pump. It's more than that, but it is the device on driver side with all the brake tubes coming in and out. What happens, is that the brushes in the pump motor wear and the pump malfunctions intermittently. The electronics in the brake system ate tied together, so you get a Christmas tree of lights (BAS/ABS/ASR) You should get the codes read. C1401 seemed to be the one pointing toward this problem. My dads '92 E320 had the same issue with the BAS/ASR light on the dash. Ended up being a bad light bulb. Go figure. DOes your cruise control work? His did not when this happened as well. Light bulb fixed it all.
