Service CD and internet
Can someone tell me why the MB service CDs require the internet to work? Is it a security measure?

check your browser settings ..
Hi, Cap'n
nope, my set works just fine without a connection to the web. if u click on the www (web?) icon it's gonna look for a connection, though. it could also be the set-up of your browser, as the CD set requires IE (or your default browser) to start up before it can load the Adobe viewer. If u have your browser set up to connect to the web once it starts up that will also mess u around. In IE5 u can select 'work offline' on the file menu to stop the web connection once u start the MB CD. In Opera there is a similar setting for offline working - Netscape has it too ... hope it helps L |

I think it just needs a brouser installed, not the internet specifically. I have a dial up at home that I can tell doesn't connect when I use it.
A short cut I take is just open the pdf files and view them. I even made a directory of what each file contains. |

Let's pretend I not very smart for a minute . when I put in the cd, I hear this growl out of the speakers, see a thing that says "Skip Intro" and then the screen goes black. I'm about ready to make mini Frisbys out of these things!

let's take the start-up one step at a time, still prentending u're not very smart
the 'growling' is some sound effect that that kinda crecendo's in the slamming of a metal door. by now you should have has a picture of a gullwing and a large MB logo. click on the 'skip intro' if u want to bypass this whole episode. u should get to a disclaimer page after the MB logo disappears or if u clicked 'skip intro' during the initial 'growlings' u might happen to see the start-up screen of the Adobe reader as it loads. check on your task bar if the browser session as well as a adobe session have started ... accept the disclaimer and then select the model u want to get the info for after u clicked on 'continue' to bypass the movie .... if somewhere along the line u need to connect to the web, click on the 'work offline' option. lemme know what happens L |

Adobe and shockwave
still pretending ...
as a follow up: the browser should complain if there is no Adobe on your box. A workable flavour is on the CD. If u do not have shockwave on your box, you will probably not see anything. Install it from the root of the CD - it should be easy . lemme know L |

I get the Gullwing and the Skip Intro, when I click "skip intro" the screen goes black. I'll have to check and see if I have Shockwave when I get home. I am on my work PC now and we have computer guys here to keep things working, not that I'm not smart enough to do it myself, mind you!!

Yup thats right !
I must admit I have had some of the same problems with my disc as well. I do not have my cd-rom external drive with me at this moment otherwise I would run it and give you a blow by blow as to what happens.

The reason the CD's are browser based is that html files are smaller. I had problems getting my cd's to work at start too. Problem was I already had Acrobat reader ver 3 already installed and the cds require Acrobat version 4 which is on the first cd. When I installed Acrobat 4 and left Acrobat 3 on - the cds would not work - glitch after glitch. Solved the problem by uninstalling both acrobat readers 3&4 - rebooted and reinstalled Acrobat4 only from the cd and all was well. You also have to install Flash which I believe is also on the cd. You do not have to be connected to the internet to use them - just make sure EI is opened.

Yeah, I see now! I tried it on my PC here and it looks like it's on the net but it' really on "My Computer" in the task bar at the bottom. Thanks to all of you! Good advise Moedip, I'll bet I have the same problem you do about the versions. I'll do what you did. Thanks a million!! Now , if somebody will just tell me how to get those two inside rear bolts out of my passenger seat that's stuck in the back position........ It's like Rosanna Rosanna Danna said, " It's always something"!

Beastie; if you're not using that 92 500E, can I have it? You know, like just until I get my 103 motor back in!!

Hey Cap'n - one other little eccentricity with the cds. If you try to get into the electrical section - be prepared to wait - it is not instantaneous to access the section because the pdf files for diagrams are so large - it could take a few minutes to open into the section - BE PATIENT it will open!!

Cap'n re: your seat - have you heard of Murphy's law? I'll bet you are suffering from Nicodameus's Law which simply states "MURPHY WAS AN OPTIMIST!"

I see what you mean about the elec section. We may have to get Jim Anderson to tell me how he made the shortcuts. ( In a language I can understand ). On the Murphy's Law thing, you're on target. Donnie asked me once if I was a tech and I pretty much said "not yet but I'm getting there".
