My 300TE is driving me nuts (no-start some times)

I turn the key and I get a click, maybe the dash lights flash and nothing else.
I turn the key again and I don't even get the click.
Disconnect the battery and I can hear something click under the hood usually.
Reconnect the battery and it starts happy as a clam.

It may or may not start any time I try it. I have a big battery disconnect switch thanks to the local harbor freight store) to make this problem less annoying. But after a dozen times in a day, it's really, really annoying.

It never stalls, it just decides it don't want to start. It seems to be after the point of getting the engine compartment hot. And living in NY with lots of snow and cold weather lately, getting the car hot does take some driving.

Sitting over night is no guarantee that it will start in the morning.

Check to make sure the ground cable is bolted to the car. Also make sure your cables are bolted securely to your battery.

Check your ignition switch, this happens to older cars a lot due to worn switches.

I don't believe it's the ignition swich, simply because messing with the battery cable always fixes the problem.

I don't think the ground cable is simply an open circuit, because that wouldn't explain the case where I turn the key to position 1 and I get dash lights and then when I turn to position 2, everything goes dark.

Once it goes dark, it stays that way; turning the key to off and then back on will not light up the dash until I disconnect the battery. Tightening the disconnect switch some more doesn't help.

What you just described will happen exactly when you have a loose ground cable. It's happened to me many times. It draws enough power from the small amount of contact it has to power dash lights, but when it comes time to hit the starter it simply doesn't have a way to pull the power it needs. You'll get a click, and then you'll get nothing until you establish a connection again.

Next time it happens shake the ground cable and see what you get. Don't focus on the battery terminal if it's tight, check the other end.
