Low Battery Message 2005 E320

Lately I've been getting the message in the photo below, "Low Battery, Convenience Functions Temporarily Unavailable." Along with that, the dashboard clock keeps adjusting its time. Could it be as simple as needing a new battery? And if so, which one? The car starts and runs fine, but I understand that there is a second battery in the engine compartment. Is that battery for accessories? Right now, I don't have the Comand Unit to include radio, navigation and satellite. Thanks.

That message is regarding the main battery in the trunk, not the smaller auxiliary battery under the hood. The electronics are complaining the battery voltage is a bit lower than they like (even though the car starts without difficulty), so they are shutting down your heated seats and limiting the heater blower to low speed while they focus on charging up the battery.

I occasionally get this message if the car has not been driven for a few days and the morning is on the cold side (cold being below freezing). The car always starts fine, and the message clears within 5 minutes.

If the message clears after a few minutes, your charging system is likely fine. Given that you are getting this message on 62 degree days, I suspect it is getting to be time for a new main battery.

Yup, like jcyuhn says, it's the big battery in the trunk

What is the age, and resting voltage of the battery? If it is the original then probably ready for a new one.

My 06 E320 CDI is/has been evidencing the same message. It's the main auto battery in the trunk under the false floor is the spare tire and battery, not the small, auxiliary sport battery under the hood (bonnet).

My CDI is now going on it's 3rd battery since new. Similar main battery-need schedule as my '99 E300's need frequency - about every 4-5 years.

The brains of the computer systems are always 'on' in these cars. A trickle charger may be something to consider, but I do not know that they would extend the life of a battery that is never depleted of it's charge, and used / run often.
