REPLACEMENT ENGINE PRICES
i own a 2006 cl500 and a 2006 cl55. both with approximately 55,000miles.
recently, i examined my insurance premiums for these two cars. the cl500 was 1/3 the premium cost for the cl55. the only significant difference in these two cars is the engines. could anyone tell me what a replacement engine would cost for the cl500? then, for the cl55? thank you. |
It is probably about the crash rates.

I don't think the price of the engine has much to do with your premium but I'll post back after I check on the engine prices. I have a funny feeling it will be a real eye opener. |

OK, here we go. I didn't have an '06 CL55 in the shop today so I used an '07 SL55 for the look-up instead. I think we'll be in the ballpark. I did have an '06 CL500 though.
The AMG Kompressor engine is only available new. No re-man's or fitted blocks to be had. The list price is $77,372.00 The standard M113 in the CL500 can be had new for $42,642.00. A re-man is available for $14,650. According to my calculation, it costs $181.83 per/HP more for the V8 Kompressor motor. I hope this helps. :) I suspect that the difference in insurance premium has something to do with the difference in horse-power. |
AMG and other low production high performance vehicles will always be much more costly to insure. The parts on an AMG easily cost double that of a normal MB. Plus I would imagine the crash rate IS higher because of how cars like that are often driven....

The OM617.952 I have is no longer available new (I realize if I really wanted I could probably get all the plans and get someone to make me one from scratch, but that would be serious money). Reman from Metric Motors is about eight grand. I'm still only paying a bit over $400 a year for insurance. I think it has more to do with the crash rates.
Incidentally, the new version of my Kawasaki retails for about the same as the reman engine for my car. I pay around $200 a year for full coverage on the bike. |
Buy the 07 car for 30k and sell the engine for 50k, undercutting the dealer. Arbitrage opportunity.
1. you have to wonder what those Sindelfingen GSP pricing guys are smoking 2. how many accidents where the engines get trashed are actually ever worth repairing? |
thnx for the input.
i figured that a complete amg cl55 engine would be about $50k. cl500 have that. my dealer tells me that both are available as rebuilds, by the way. |
plenty of low mileage engines on ebay
