Renewing idle air valve rubber connectors
I'm replacing all the rubber engine air breather hoses. there is a little hose that connects the two rubber boots at the idle air valve assembly.
is it this part? i have the part but don't know what do with it 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL Base Sedan - Intake System - Page 2 Air Intake Tube p/n 116 997 16 52 if so, how do i install... it appears it is closed on one end. i'm confused. the original assemply has a tube connected between the two boots that was at sometime buggerd up because it's gunked up with some kind of schmutz to make it air tight. |
There were two versions of that.
Some cars received a tube that is open at both ends. Some cars received the closed up on. My 89 420SEL has the closed up one. Can you tell if the original one you had is closed up on one end? Can you post up your VIN, maybe the EPC will tell me who got what |
I believe production cut off was mid '87 for the closed tube. 86 to mid 87 are open, beyond that are closed. My dad's 87 and my 89 both have a closed version of the tube. In the EPC I believe closed supersedes both though.

been traveling on business for the last week.
thanks for replies. not sure what the original was but an open tube was in place when i replaced the rubber bits. i put the same open tube back i guess if the tube is closed, the intention is for no air to be exchanged between the two areas? my vin: WDBCA39D5GA223476 anything you can tell me about the vin details would certainly be interesting, in any event. thanks |
Hmm no clear mentioning of that close pipe:

I may be wrong about this but I believe the different tubes were related to engine size.
The 380/420 are small block while the 500/560 are big blocks. The bigger engines need a little more air to idle than the smaller engines. I know that my 84 500 has the open tube and my spare 90 560 has the open tube. A friend has an 83 380 with a closed tube and another friend has an 89 420 that doesn't have a tube at all, the hoses don't have the holes for the tube. Maybe some one with access can check this out. |
Mercedes hasn't made a big block engine since the M100 that I know of. The M116 and M117 are very similar motors. They use A LOT of similar parts.
Between my friend and I we have four M116 and M117 powered cars. All of which have that tube. Now I'm not sure if its closed or open. My 89 M116 has it. and its closed. |
Sorry, I shouldn't have used the "big block" term. However the 117 is about 2 inches wider than the 116. They look almost exactly the same but the 117 is bigger.

thanks guys. i'll just leave the open one in for now.
i still have to tear into the intake manifold anyway to replace all the rubber stuff underneath. someday when i'm up for a BIG challenge i guess |
