Awful noise coming from engine 87 300D turbo
 
I have a 1987 300D turbo (W124) in good shape with about 216K miles. Last weekend it started making an awful noise:

I had small version of this sound last summer that 'went away' but it is back and I would like to know if anyone has heard this before and where it could be coming from?
