W210 right mirror tilt stopped tilting

Where should I start to look for the cause of my right mirror to stop dipping when in reverse? Looks like fuse 4 under the rear seat controls it, but everything else on that fuse still works.

2001 E430.

Was this an optional feature? My 1998 E300TD mirror does not tilt on reverse. Never has...but I've only had the car about a month. Will be following this thread.

Cheers, John

I believe this feature is only available on the 2000+ W210s.

It is a nice feature - in reverse, the mirror moves all the way in and all the way down, so you can see behind the rear tire while backing.

I'd like to get it working again.

John,

My 99 E300 does this.

On the console, depress the right hand mirror adjustment button and then put it in reverse.

Hahaha

Thanks! That was it! How simple! I know, it's probably in the owner's manual.

Hmmm...here's a twist. I took the advice above and moved the mirror adjustment control to the passenger side (it was set for the driver mirror). Great success! When I put the trans in reverse, the mirror tipped -- just like I'm used to in my BMW. Yay!

But... When I shifted back into park, the mirror did not recover -- it remained aimed down and in. Likewise, when I shifted from reverse to drive (or any gear below drive), the mirror still failed to recover.

Only pressing the mirror control back to the driver's side causes the passenger mirror to recover its proper driving position.

So, anyone got such an easy fix to this little twist?!

Thanks!
Cheers, John

I obviously know little about the mirrors, but, now that it is pointing down, can you adjust it with the button? If not, maybe you blew a fuse?

I can still adjust the mirror in all directions. It will still recover driving position if I move the controller button to the driver side instead of the passenger side. But shouldn't the passenger mirror tip itself back up when I shift out of reverse to park or drive? That's what it is failing to do.

Cheers, John

On mine, it tilts back up to where it was as soon as I put it in drive.

How about this - maybe you kept the switch in the driver's position so long that dirt and grime worked its way into the console switch. Maybe exercise the switch many times between driver's side and pax side to clear any crude out?

Right side mirror won't.........

<>

This is a familiar problem and is just one of those failures that make it into the JD Power surveys. My '01 C320 has had this problem off and on for the past six years. The first time, it's going to be the mirror selector switch pointing to the wrong mirror. After that, it's one of two things. Either the driver's seat memory module or the mirror motor. My car's seat module (stores seat and mirror positions) has been swapped out several times but this time it looks like it's the mirror motor itself. When it fails, I can move it left and right but not up and down. But it gets well sometimes and starts working again (now, in fact) but the motor/geartrain sounds like it's grinding rocks and is slow. It will be replaced under extended warranty when I can get the car in to the dealer.

There is one thing you might try. Position the mirror by hand and then press the memory and #1 buttons. Simultaneously. That worked once for me.

Forget about dirt in the switches.

my experience resembles that described by Roger. my car is 99 E320 and it
has this convenience feature. some days, it just acts like it has a big luggee
in its throat. no pattern in ailment i.e. cold days, or rainy days etc.

what i havent done is to remove the cover and see if it might have anything
to do with clearance/obstruction issues.

about 5x a year, it'll exhibit this anomaly. but so far, it just recovers. absolutely
no pattern detected as to when/why it manifests in this manner.

Yes it is.

My 1998 E320 has it.

My 2001 was acting eractically and the dealer said it needed to be reprogrammed. They did it for me (it was under warranty). Reprogramming can be done by you - the instructions are in the owners manual. It usually happens when you have a power problem (like changing the battery). That is when my became erratic.
