How do I clear the SRS system after air bag deployment

My passenger front air bag depoyed in my 1996 C280. The SRS light is on.
I assume that I have to clear before I put in a new air bag.
I bought the air bag but I don't want to installed if if the SRS light is still on because I am afraid it will go off.

How do I clear the SRS light? What would be a resonable price for a mechanic to charge to clear it?

Thanks

You don't. The module must be replaced.

Inside the SRS module are the crash sensors. These are one time use: after the forces of a crash the sensors can't be trusted to work properly. Quoting Uve Ross of Ross-Tech:

In other words, VW does not make the "Crash Data Stored" code unclearable via the normal diagnostic API simply because they want to sell more airbag modules.

In the end, it is my personal opinion that a car is safer with airbags which are certain not to go off, than with a reset module which has the potential to deploy them when it shouldn't.

If you can find a module from a non crashed car you could install it. Make sure the part number matches exactly.

But, in most models those lights can only be cleared with an advanced scanner.

Where is that module located?

Thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated.
