Is there any way of fixing FLOOR SHIFTER ASSEMBLY 2000 ML

Is there any way of fixing FLOOR SHIFTER ASSEMBLY 2000 ML.
The shifter stays locked in park. I do not get what gear im in displayed on cluster. I have replaced brake petal switch.
I have also swapped out the shifter with one that works and know its the shifter thats my problem.
Does anyone know what fails in the shifter assembly and is there a way to fix them.

I replaced mine after spilling a drink on it.

I tinkered with the old one and I suppose the idea is to expose the circuit boards for cleaning but I couldn't get down in there.
