Question OBD II

I am thinking of buying a OBD II Scanner for my 1994 Mercedes C280. I have a check engine light on and would like to know the codes before the Dealership Service tries to corner me into another $2000 bill.

Can anyone tell me if the OBD II running on my Palm V can work on a 1994 C280? The write ups, only reference 1996 car younger cars.

Bill

the 1995 C280 is fully OBDII compliant.... the 1994 is partly OBDII compliant. I think it would work enough to your satisfaction, but don't know for sure! try www.obdii.com, or maybe it's www.obd2.com Give that a try... they will tell you exactly the compliance of your car. Good luck!

OK David,
I took your advise and went to the www.odb2.com web site. The specific answer to the question: 'Will the ODB II, work on a 1994 C280', was not posted.

So, I sent an email to the sales department, asking if the ODB II would work on a 1994 C280.

There Response:
Hello Bill
Is your 1994 MB OBDII compliant?

Have you ever felt like you were in a Catch22 situtation?

Can anyone confirm there and/or my question?

Mr (Oh Nooooo) Bill

Because the 202 chassis was born at about the time everyone was preparing to use OBDII protocols, the car became the first MB to use such. You should be able to read codes. I doubt if you will be able to get a freeze frame or be able to view monitor status. No actuation testing will be available.

As David says its a big maybe. As I said, its my opinion, that the 94 will do at least code retrieval and clearing and some actual values. Probably no more.

MrBill57:

What scanner did you end up buying? Was it able to read codes?

I have a 94' C220 Diesel Euro and I'm also thinking of getting a scanner to personal use.

Please let me know how you scanner was

Thanks!

I bought the EASE Diagnostics software Personal Edition from the obd2.com site. I have been very satisfied with it considering how little it cost. You must, of course, have a laptop or be willing to haul your desktop to the shop.

Good luck,
