my car is an 86 300e there is only a black cover and the hole to insert the key and on the outer edges two small holes i was told to insert a paper clip bent into a u shape into the two small holes and push in firmly to release the black cover and it should remove by unscrewing it counterclockwise but this doesnt work when i insert it nothing happens i put them in as far as it will go but the outside cover will not turn thanks for the reply tho i appreciate it if anyone else can help please reply i really need to get my car driving again thanks

I did my daughters 90 190E 2.6 not too long ago and if I remember correctly, that black bezel just unscrews. It has nothing to do with the two little holes in the tumbler.I think I used my thumb and fore fingers of both hands 90 degrees off to each other. If it's really tight, the fingers may not be enough.
Once its off then comes the wire in the tumbler. I left a deposit equal to the cost of the tool with a mechanic at an indy shop. I have a hunch that the paper clip wont be long enough to do the job.
If you have access to a Haynes manual for the 190E 2.3, I believe it goes through the proceedure.
