240D oil cooler, go or stay

I have a '80" 4 spd, 240D that I bought as a parts car (no AC) and it has NO oil cooler. I posted this over on Diesel Discussion and am fishing for some more input. Does anyone know the criteria for using an oil cooler?

Someone said Euro cars with no AC or auto trans were not equipped with them. After reading the thread on oil cooler hose replacement I got to thinking it might be nice not to have one for several reasons. Do any of you folks have any thoughts about this? If they can run w/o them on the other side of the "pond" why can't I?

Stevo,

If your car is not a Euro model, it certainly has some Euro components. With no a/c, it is almost certainly a Euro.

My '84 Euro 240D went 380,000 miles on the original engine with no oil cooler. Most all of these miles were in Texas, not exactly an arctic climate area.

If you were to stumble across an oil cooler and all the lines and the filter housing, it would be a worthwhile modification, but then you have to worry about an oil cooler line blowing and ruining the engine.

The oil cooler appears to be overkill.

Have a great day,

Thanks for the comments, gota say that was what I was wanting to hear. One of the reasons I am attracted to the 240Ds is their simplicity but why do you suppose the Germans put them on their export cars ? I have not seen any 84s around here, did they export 240Ds in 84 ? Anyway if yours survived for 380.00 miles in Texas w/o the cooler, I'm going for it here in the Pacific NW where 70 degrees is a HOT day....Thanks
