W210 Blower Fan Problem and Questions
 

After over 400K on the clock my blower fan died. No problem. Replace. Less than 6 months later, it might be dying again.

The only thing is that it died the first time and now and someone is using the car. She always turns the fan up and down depending on how hot or cold she is and when she is settled down, make adjustments.

Question 1: does it make any difference from a physics standpoint?

question 2: does constantly turning the fan up and down hurt the motor?

I think yours falls in to the year range where they updated the resistor and I think the whole blower needs to be replaced? Do you remember what was all replaced the last time? Has the dust filter been replaced lately? I can't remember if yours also has the charcoal filter.

I don't really think that someone changing the fan speed would affect the life of the resistor or blower.

Hey it's possible if just the resistor was changed that that the motor could be going bad by coincidence, I mean 400K miles.......

But of course on that car it is automatic so ideally she would just set the temp she wants and put it in AUTO and leave it alone, unless the defroster needs to be used.

I did change filters and nick did install a new motor. A couple of months after I turned it over to her to use, the original one broke. Now after a few months, the new one is broken. Kinda makes me wonder if it is bad luck or whether her playing with it has something to do with it.

The wife and I just set and forget. She gets in and the car is hot so she turns up the fan. When it cools down, she turns the fan down. Since she makes many stops, this process is constantly repeated. Just wondering if it really helps you get cooler fast or is it like people hitting the elevator button again and again to make it come faster. That and if this hurts the fan. Thanks

Replaced ONLY the blower motor or both?

The fan speed should be adjusting by itself in AUTO mode, when it gets up to temp the speed should slow itself down. Maybe suggest that she alters the temp setting not the fan speed???

PS the master tech still has a flip phone and does not txt

It came as a set. So both the regulator and motor.

I probably will put a tape overthe thing since she seems like the sort that thinks that if you push the button more, the elevator comes faster.

Was the replacement part MB original? IMHO, changing the blower speed frequently has no effect on blower motor/regulator service life. If anything, the pushbutton unit is doing more work.

I think so. Just puzzled why one motor fast after 400K and another one fails in less than 50k.

Better put tape on the steering wheel too. She is probably messing with that all the time also!!

Speaking as an electrical engineer (but not automotive) I agree the only component suffering at all here is the button, and it is built to take it. If the fan failed quickly then either the problem is not the fan or you got a bad fan. For the record I have worked on several fans and regulators but never that specific car.
