350SL not staying started

it starts right up with turn of key then just dies before I apply gas
Had a fuel hose leak and mechanic said about 5 gallons spilled out
I saw the puddle it was huge
Put 5 gallons back in car and now cant figure why it stalls
Have had this car for years and it always started right up and stayed running
had mech change bushings on throttle linkage
only thing I can think of - is perhaps a fuel screen coming out of gas tank - does this model have one and do they plug up easily?

perhaps a vacuum line?

any help is appreciated

When the key is turned to the START position the fuel pump relay is closed by a direct connection from the key switch/starter solenoid. When the key is released to the RUN position the pump relay is under the control of the ECU (through yet another relay). Look for a fault in one or both relays, or in the ECU. In this case, when the key is released to RUN, the fuel pump stops, and you are probably hearing a relay clicking.

I have been advised it is a bad fuel pump - diagnosis by an ex mercedes dealership - they kept the repair center going. I see an online vendor has them for $134 delivered and I have found posts on forum on how to replace fuel pump on a R107

Since the engine will start when the key is in the START position, it is receiving fuel at sufficient pressure. Since it is receiving fuel, you may conclude that the pump is working. In addition to the relays mentioned above, it is possible that the start is being accomplished on the Cold Start Injector (CSI) only, and when the key is returned to RUN, both a relay and the CSI are shut off. In any event, pump operation is required to obtain any start at all.

Also, try posting in the SL section.
