Valvoline 722.6 Transmission Fluid
Just picked up an E55 with a 722.6. Was at an autoparts store and on the back of the bottle of Valvoline Full Synthetic Import Multi-Vehicle the bottle says its meets NAG-1 and 236.10 specifications. Now, NAG-1 as I understand it is the Chrysler term, but 236.10 was the spec needed for 722.6s.
At $6.99 a quart it is less than half the price of the Mercedes fluid. Has anyone used it in their .6? http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/multi_vehicle_atf.pdf

NAG1 is a MB term, its New Automatic Gearbox 1. I have used this valvoline fluid in my car and worked OK, no complaints, it shifts a bit strong honestly but you can buy the real mercedes NAG2 fluid (also good for NAG1) cheaper than this from an oil distributor who is a shell jobber. Look up your area and find one, then call them up, my town has it for 60-65 a box of 12 quarts. Its slightly thinner but it does behave nicely - if you like lexus type smooth shifts. There is a mechanic I know who uses ATF+4 in these cars because he says it behaves the best and is pretty strong ATF, I drove one car and it felt no different than any other NAG1 car. p.s. - orielly house brand ATF for imports claims to be usable in MB236.10 too .

I used nearly 4 quarts of the Valvoline Import synthetic in my '97 E 300 D, a few weeks ago. It shifts fine but it has been less than 500 miles so far. I would think that Valvoline is an expert on atf, so if they say it meets the 236.10 spec, I have no concern using it. Some have used their Max Life, which is said to meet NAG-1. I have found it hard to find another atf that meets 236.10 spec.

The Shell fluid is ATF 134. You have to track down a Shell Wholesale distributor though. The gas stations don't carry it (at least in my area.) I ended up buying it from Amazon.com since I don't have a distributor close by. The transmission in my '97 CL500 is smooth as glass. Don't know if it is the transmission (5 speed) or the fluid.

shell 3403 is unicorn blood in the USA - however it performs the absolute best in these transmissions. It behaves a bit odd in its life - it goes from being blood red to green to yellow then brown like chrysler ATF+4 does. the only MB listing fluid you will find today for these NAG1 gearboxes in USA is the shell 134 ATF. I sometimes come to know of some oil depot having old stock 3403 ATF but never have actually seen it or been able to buy it. Its called shell spirax 3403M115 now. According to some transmission rebuilders I have met who work on these - the old shell unicorn blood is nothing special now - it was super duper special when this gearbox was launched as such electric gizmo gearboxes were not common place, most autos were oldschool or a slow move into some electrification - The NAG1 was light years ahead. Such ATF is pretty common now and very closely mimics other manufacturer spec ATFs.
