Third W124 - Gotta Love 'em
First I owned a $1600 92 300TE, drove it until reverse died (the dreaded click click when in revere announces you have six months, maybe), drove a year with no reverse, HG went about 200K. To the boneyard for $400.
Put that toward $2000 for a 300 CE Cabrio, Got hit in bumper (1/4 inch dent) and their insurance paid $1050. Drove my mid life crisis car for 14 months. Stopped several times by constables for whatever (appearing to corner too fast, loud acceleration, headlights too bright) but no tickets. SWMBO had me get rid of it because I was taking too much time on weekends tinkering with it. Traded in for $300 (!) at CarMax for minivan for SWMBO. Oh well, $150 for a 14 month car payment not so bad when you can sport about in a convertible. Top down, Hilton Head, fit in with all the others. Drove old van from SWMBO, Kia with 298K. Sold for $1150. Found my burgundy 91 300TE, 235 K, motor and head replaced before me, satellite radio, everything works. $1200. So I am starting out with my $50 wagon, which has new PS pump, motor mounts, and new water pump. I have already put in half a can of Trans-X, smoothed shifting out in five miles. Oil leak abated with one container of Lucas and a bottle of White SHepard rear main seal fix. I love these cars. Fun to work on, fun to hunt parts for. This one does not do the bunny hop so the spheres are still good. Has dog screen in back. It has the decal residue on both doors for a large police badge emblem, have no idea if it was owned by an alarm sales weasel or what. Original owner was a doctor. I'm just as proud of it as his wife was hauling the kids to school. 23 mpg Savannah to Augusta commute each week.
