190E sudden loss of reverse

My '93 190E 2.6 lost reverse quite suddenly. I was driving it to diagnose a rear-end shake. When I tried to back up I had no reverse at all (reverse worked fine before the test drive, and all forward gears still work).

Now, when first started, it will attempt to move in reverse (will go about a foot on level ground) but that quickly fades to no reverse at all.

The fluid level on the dipstick was fine before this happened, but now shows the level as being too high (about 3 inches too high on the dipstick).

Could it be a stuck valve in the transmission?

Thanks.
Brett

Very commin problem with the transmission you have in the car - 722.4.
Same goes for other M.B.'s of the period with the 722.3 transmission.

Generally the remedy is a rebuild or replacement transmission.

But a complete loss of reverse?? My reverse has been out for like 2 years, but its not completely out and I am able to reverse from flat planes and some that are slightly declined. Does your reverse work at all???

+1 rebuild or replace.

To be certain drain and remove pan and look for little critters. Pick your parts have plenty of these transmissions.

Ivanerrol -- What is it that goes bad? (I would want to make sure I’m replacing the bad parts.)

Ismalley – I can get it to move about a foot on level ground. Then it stops.

I’ve never been inside a transmission before. What needs to be replaced when rebuilding? Are there decent kits available? If so, where?

I would think it should roll on it's own down a decline! Don't you mean slightly inclined?

The most complex systems can fail in the simplest way.

Yes! any who, the point was that I still have some reverse. I never thought that the reverse would just go out completely without warning. I would assume there must be some sort of slippage or hesitation at first when shifting to reverse

My son has the lsmalley problem. He's had it for a year. I think he has been lucky so far. It will be impractical to get a rebuild for his 92 190e. 2.6 ..
