Distributor cover

I have noticed that all W126 motors have that plastic cover that goes over the distributor with the star on the top. My car doesn't have that. I don't know if it ever came with one or not since this is a euro. So the question is, do I really need this thing?? Is it more cosmetic or does it actually serve a real purpose?

That cover is called a suppressor housing and can be had at FastLane for ~$23.00. I would think it serves to keep dirt and moisture from the ignition wire ends at the distributor - a nice touch in my book. To tell if your car was ever fitted for one, take a look at the distributor cap - there should be three small rectangular protusions/recepticles, those are where the three legs of the housing attach.

Are you speaking of the suppressor housing piece mentioned by Mike Tangas, a piece that front-ends the actual distributor, or are you talking about the larger, somewhat pliable cover that snaps into place over the top of the entire dist. assembly?

I am talking about the big cover that covers the entire distributor, wire ends and all with the big MB star on the very top. What you see in pictures. I guess the latter one in your post.

I've popped the hood on alot of 300SE/300SEL 126 cars on used car lots and have been amazed at how many are missing this cover.

The cover actually snaps on to the suppressor housing. There are some plastic tangs on the suppressor housing that the large cover snaps on to. These break off easily. When that happens, you cannot fasten the large cover. The suppressor housing must be replaced.

I think I omitted the word "cover" in my post. I'll post the part number for you when I get home.

Part number 000 158 21 85, comes back to a suppressor housing doing a part # search through FastLane. The cover also has a secondary part number of 123 059 10 14, but I didn't check that one.
