W123 M102 sump removal question

Hello everyone. Just a quick question. I need to remove the sump in my 1983 W123 with M102 engine and manual gearbox. I just would like to know if any of you have done this job before and is it really necessary to remove the engine like the manual says or can I just loosen the engine mountings etc and lift the engine a bit with an engine hoist to get it out? I have done this job before on a 190E by only lifting the engine, it was a difficult job but I got the pan out and back in again eventually. I'm not so sure if the same procedure will work with the W123 as well? Can it also be done this way?

Any help or info will be much appreciated.
Thanks
