grinding noises when starting

This happens just about everytime I start the car. Sometimes it doesn't, but most of the time it does. When I turn on the car... it comes to life and then for a 1 or 2 seconds makes a grinding sound and stops. I would appreciate any input on what could be causing the grinding sound.

Motor mounts???

A bad mount could be causing the fan to eat at the shroud. I had one break on the left side of a 440, everytime you backed up there was a terrible grinding noise. It went away when the shroud did. Ended up replacing the mount and the shroud. Check the condition of the upper inside rim of the shroud.

Might also be a sticking bendix, keeping the star drive engaged, or partially engage to the ring gear.

Hello Mike... I looked through the records and found that in 1996 the motor mounts had been replaced. I have the same feeling as Matt does.. that it might not be releasing at a time it should. How would I go on and about in fixing this?
