Brought home another stray

Found this locally with only 123k miles on it and aside from a door ding that has begun to rust is is totally rust free! Everything seems to work and it was dealer serviced in NYC until last fall when the PO stopped driving and have it to her nephew who I bought it from.

It needs the rust spot attended to along with a paint job since the paint is currently junk but mechanically it is perfect. I even have the service history since new :D

NICE

Okay, I'm alittle prejudiced in my opinion. Luv MB V8's. You will too. Looks like you found a nice one.

Stretch 02-06-2015 01:18 AM

Looks like fun

gatorblue92 02-06-2015 06:15 PM

Took it thru the car wash this afternoon. The paint looks much better in daylight and when its clean.

Very cool!

My dad picked up an E420 this past fall, they are great cars. Pick up a 92 WOT module if you're planning on holding onto it.

Its on the list. I forgot how useless these are compared to the euro lights on my other W124's

gatorblue92 02-07-2015 04:08 PM

Its amazing what wheels and tires can do for a car.

nice wheels! are those ET37 offset by any chance?
I will be putting new tires and 16" wheels on the '95 wagon soon. There are so many choices, all OE of course I wouldn't be caught dead with 18" black painted wheels on my ride.
I still have a set of CLK wheels, the ones shown on the Blue '87 300D in my gallery pics but the bling factor was too great for my disposition (besides some snide comments I received over plated wheels!) so I bought a set exactly the same but not plated from a Forum member over a year ago and love 'm
So I just ordered another set for the wagon...
Oh yeah, those leather seats look almost mint! don't forget to feed em sometime.. what was that stuff I used when I had leather seats, Lexol?

unkl300d 02-07-2015 07:07 PM

Lexol !

OP, yes upon scrutiny, those headlights are dopey. Euro headlights will really enhance the look.

gatorblue92 02-15-2015 05:00 PM

So this happened last week... Yes I took a picture of the odometer showing the model of the car ;)

Good Stuff

Pretty soon you're going to have to take a picture of which car you drove on a particular day, so you can remember what to look for in the parking lot.

LOL its not that bad yet although my driveway does currently have 3 W124's parked in it. I am trying to sell the 87 300E so I will be back down to 2 hopefully soon.

gatorblue92 02-23-2015 06:08 AM

It was finally warm enough this weekend to do some work on the car so I changed the oil and did a through inspection of the underside of the car. I was shocked to find that it was bone dry under there. Every other Mercedes I have owned has at least some small oil leak from somewhere but not this car. I was also shocked that the two gallon jugs of oil I purchased were not enough to fill the crankcase. Nearly 9 quarts to fill the oil to the middle of the dipstick

PARSHOOT1 02-25-2015 07:43 PM

V8 Oil Changes...

9 quarts brings new meaning to the old saying..."checked my oil & was down a quart".

What reason do you assign to your good fortune that the car was dry underneath & not a leaker? PO maintenance habits....Amount of miles on the car.....????

I think a bit of both. The car was parked for a long time before I got it too so that could also have something to do with it.

gatorblue92 03-22-2015 06:37 PM

Did a bit of work this weekend... Euro lights from the 300E, new intake tubes and gave the car a good cleaning. I'm still looking for wiper delete panels in silver and a nice bumper in the same color if anyone has them.

Do you know what the color code is? We have maybe 6-8 W124s in the nearby yards at any given moment.

I think its 744 which is brilliant silver metallic.

Stretch 03-24-2015 03:14 AM

Looking much better - are those wiper delete panels the same size as for the W201?

I don't think so. Im pretty sure they are a bit taller and longer than the W201. There are even two sizes of W124 panels. I have the set on the 300E which I'll use if I part it out but then I need to find paint to match.

I had the wheels off this weekend for new brakes and they are 16x7 ET41.

According to the service records that came with the car it had a harness replacement done in 2000... With a harness made in 1995...

Clark from BW hooked me up with this which came this afternoon. Installing this weekend.

Here are some pictures of the brakes when I did them a few weeks back. I'm positive the rear rotors were original and I have my suspicions about the front as well. Brembo rotors in front and ATE rotors in the rear with Akebono pads. The front pads were extremely worn and they even had some material that broke off when I removed them. Never seen that before.

Have you got 4 pot callipers on the front? If so that uneven pad wear probably indicates sticking pistons - if you have that daft sliding single piston calliper design then the sliding parts might be sticking.

gatorblue92 04-21-2015 05:25 AM

Yes its the 4 pot caliper. I thought that was possible as well but it seems to be driving fine now. I'm going to keep an eye on it.

For what its worth, the W201 ones are plastic and the 124 ones ares steel.

Front bumpers are available new aftermarket really reasonably, I'd probably just get a new one, I've bought two around $95/ea from LKQ's replacement parts arm.

PARSHOOT1 04-21-2015 06:35 PM

Calipers

How did the wiring harness install go?

Do you think your calipers are original?

Nothing like the 4 pot calipers to realize what a great brake system feels like compared to the ones on other Benzes that I drive.

I haven't tackled the harness yet. Ill work on it this weekend. I see the calipers were replaced in 2002 by the dealer. I don't think they are dragging at all now but its still something to keep an eye on. I do also know I need to replace the soft rubber brake lines. They are showing some signs of age.

gatorblue92 04-24-2015 05:00 AM

Installed the harness last night. It took all of 45 minutes and the car runs like a top now. It is one of the easier jobs I have done on these cars.

gatorblue92 04-25-2015 09:01 AM

Here are a few pictures of the old harness. Its pretty crispy

Wow, need to check mine!
Scary

gatorblue92 05-30-2015 07:08 AM

Yesterday I decided to fiddle around with the A/C with the help of my neighbor who is a HVAC tech. We checked the freon level and it was just a little low so we added about 3/4 of a 12oz can and I now have ICE COLD A/C. We will see how long this holds up but I'm crossing my fingers I will have working air all summer. Black leather seats look nice but they sure are HOT.
