Is there anyone out there who has personl knowledge of the M110 FI engine? I have gotten some comments from some locals since I bought my Euro 280SL that, "this was not a good and reliable engine. It had a history of problems and MBZ discontinued it."
I would like some comments from professionals on this.

M110 injected engines are rock solid in terms of longevity and reliability, although they're not strong contenders in terms of performance.

Isn't the 110 engine also very expensive to perform a valve job on?

I have owned several & they all were reliable, however they do require more maintence than other models due to adjustable valves. ALSO they are somewhat oil leakers!
The last one that I had was a euro 1981 280E that made 200+ HP. & was a blast with a manual transmission. I autocrossed the car for 3 years & won several local awards in SCCA.

M110 is damn near bullet proof. The only bad thing other than oil leaks is the sewing machine sound from poorly adjusted valves. Keep the valves adjusted right and keep oil and coolant in it and it'll almost run forever. :-)

Isn't this the motor which, according to _Road and Track_, got an M-B publicity man in trouble with his bosses when he said at the press introduction: "Mercedes-Benz finally gets the one thing it always lacked: a BMW engine!"? I have a friend who has a '79 grey-market 280TE (may be for sale in a year or so) and it has always had plenty of zooom for my taste -- but maybe that's only in contrast to my '85 300TD.

The Euro version is pretty quick. I have a 1982 280E with an automatic that is as quick as my BMW 535i which has a 5 speed.

The only real complaint that I have heard about the M110 is that it is really heavy and that makes it hard to pull/work on. I have an 1980 W126 280SE and it is not quick but if you wind the motor out it will move. I think the Eruo version puts out close to what the small v8 puts out in American trim. Mine has a manual transmission and that helps as it does not have much low end grunt, although it is happy lugging around town in 4th.

Anyone out there who can tell me how to adjust the valves? My 81 280TE is sounding like a Singer.
