Old Blue:
I have heard from many european sources that they prefer the 500 engine over the 560 (in euro trim), so that is why I am considering this car. I have driven both a 560SEL and 560SEC and so when I drive this 500, I will be able to do a good comparison in terms of feel. |

Re: euro 500sel
bribrenz:
So you're 82 500 has a 120,000 miles and going strong...that's great to hear and reassuring. You mentioned you did some repairs in respect to the transmission and exhaust and they were different than US spec. The exhaust I was aware of, but what is different in regards to the transmission? The timing chain, water pump, starter and alternator are all different also? |

To Dan Younes,
I know all about the rear end sliding from an old car that I used to own that had a 65% to 35% weight distribution front and rear respectively (BMW) and boy was that a lot of fun at times, especially when it rained, but I won't be doing that with the 500 if I get it. This car is exactly as it was in Germany, so if it didn't have cats there than it doesn't have them now. I'm glad to hear that you have had a positive experience with yours. |

Thanks SIlver Boat
I will remember to check with Phil at Parts Shop and Benz Bin when looking for parts. I actually drove a 280se like yours years ago and remember the car being great. It had ABS, might have been a 1985 or older. |

I didn't notice the US bumpers .vs. the Euro bumpers on the W126 until I started going to this site.
The US W123 bumpers are obviously bigger.. however I didn't know that the US 126's have big bumpers too. No! The Euro bumpers look a lot better on that car! (W126) Let's not even talk about the headlights... Especially the older style ones, and believe it or not, in Indonesia people swap their Euro headlights for US style headlights (123/126/124/etc). I guess it pays to be different. My dad just picked up a pair of W123 Bosch headlights (new stock) for $160/pair. He actually went to a Benz shop and the guy quoted him almost $500 for the US headlights... hehehe... then when he told the guy that he was buying headlights for a US car the guy just didn't know what to say. |

What I did was I disconected the muffler behind the CAT and stuck a pipe into the cat and beat everything out. I started the car let it blow out while driving and this helped the BMW drive to Daytona.
hope this helps |

What suspension
What kind of suspension do these Euro's have.
I know with the 560SEL (1986 on?) they went to the air suspension and added considerable weight. My US version 500SEL has a more traditional suspension, and the power to weight ratio seems good for such a nice ride. Also - regarding the exhaust. You can purchase the "euro spec" exhaust suystem - complete from timevalve.com. If I wanted the extra Hp - will this fit directly onto my car, or are there more modifications to be had? Will my EGR and any other sensors need to be disabled/reworked? |

Your Euro 500SEL will most likely have the hydropneumatic syspension on all 4 corners.

Would that have less of an effect on SE short wheelbase cars? It would seem to me that the suspension would not compress as much with weight in the car, because of the lever concept. Or am I completely full of it? Anyone?

I would think that the wheelbase would have nothing to do with it but i may be wrong

Probably not, or not enough to make a practical difference. On a car with normal suspension, I guess there is not much you can do about this is there?
