new engine for 1 190 2.3 16
I'm thinking about buying a 190 2.3 16valve, according to the ad, it needs a new engine. It's a grey market european model. Any suggestions about the best and cheapest way to get this car on the road will be greatly appreciated.

You need to get the car for free, or VERY close to it. The 16V engine is REALLY expensive, and your repair bill will easily reach what it costs to buy a nice 16V with a still-good engine.
Why on earth does it need a new engine? A friend of mine owns my 'ol 16V, and it's over 500,000 kilometers, and the bottom end is still tight and strong. Those engines are nearly unburstable. Also, grey market cars can be troublesome on their own, given unpredictable climates conerning emission regulations and so on. Sounds like one giant wallet-busting headache just waiting to happen. |
I haven't been able to get thru to the owner yet, so I'm not sure what is wrong with the engine. The ad just says 'needs engine'. It's advertised for 2,000 - I could probably offer less. I figured $1500 for the car, and about $7000 to get a rebuilt engine dropped in. I haven't seen any used ones in my area that meet my requirements ( black, 5 speed, clean interior) for less than $8500.
I had one of these a few years back, and the top end of the engine was ready for some work at 175,000 miles. Unfourtunately I was rear ended in traffic, and the car was totaled. I've been looking for a replacement ever since. |
175K-miles for top-end is about right, with most needing some attention 150-200K-miles. But, I've yet to see a 16V car that wasn't completely abused needing a complete engine.
I would look for a cared for example, maybe even travel a bit. Project cars can be much more trouble than they're worth. Talk to the owner. Maybe it needs a top end. Then the price is right. |
Not sure what part of the country you're in, but there's one on eBay that appears to be in decent condition:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1823264879&r=0&t=0 One neat thing about this particular car is that it must be a very late production U.S. spec. 16V because it has a pop-up sunroof. I wish mine did... Good luck Disclaimer: I have no affiliation or monetary interest with the selling party or car. |
That one does look pretty nice, and it's only a few hours from me. I'm hoping to find a black one though. Plus I'm a little concerned about it being in a collision and a flood.

If the car is right, I wouldn't get too excited about a collision. It's easy and cheap to have a bodyshop do a quick exam to find in the car is straight.
If you have time, then be patient. Watch for a clean black five speed. Even at $8500-$10,000, you'll be better off buying a running car than a project. With the project, you're at $8500 and have done no other work. It's pretty rare to find a perfect car that "only" needs an engine. The SLS might need attention. ACC and cooling. A cared for car generally does not suddenly wear out it's engine. Years ago I looked at a smoke silver 16V. The engine was on it's last legs. The odo said 200,000 kilometers. The tranny was starting to buzz in a couple gears. The seat cushions were sagging really badly. 200K? More like 500K! The problem with buying a 16V in 2002 is that the last of the 16V's were sold fifteen years ago. |
