Smile W108 Steering gear box rebuild

Help! The steering gear box on my 1968 280S was leaking badly so I purchased a rebuild kit. Everything went well replacing o rings, oil seals and so forth until I went to far, pulling the main shaft out and the ball bearings dropped to the bottom of the cylinder the shaft fits in. I hope I am not sunk but cannot figure out how to get the ball bearings back in properly. I hope someone can provide some guidance so I can get back on the road.
