How to replace 89 300E rear differential- Help!
Please help me, I'm attempting to replace the rear differential for my 89 300E, but I don't know how hard it is, what to look for and how to do it. I've done some minor repairs for my car before such as: replacing shocks, break pads,..., but never done any thing with the engine or transmission. I consider myself a fast learner. Please advise me as what to do, any infor is greatly appreciated. Thankyou very much for all your help.

You will need a few special tools...Like 8 and 12mm allen sockets.

Tom:
I am not a tech, just an avid DIY'er but I have replaced differentials in both a 124 and 201 body. The bolts that hold the axle to the output flanges have 12 pt stars so you'll need the correct size for those. There are 8 bolts per axle and you'll need to be able to turn the axle as you go around to remove the bolts. This means that you need some good jack stands to hold the car up while you're doing this...or if you have access to a lift, that would be best. There are only three bolts that hold the differential to the subframe. Two at the back which use the 12mm allen heads that Benzmac referred to and one in front. You'll also need to remove the ABS sensor. Oh, I think it's much easier to do all of this if you remove the exhaust from the cat back. Good luck |

Thanks Glen for the advice. It was very helpful, I need to prepare everything before doing it. Now I need more help from any one out there.
I just bought a used rear differential for my 89 800E and I don't know how good the seals are so I'd like to replace these seals before putting this real differential into the car, but I don't know how to go about taking the old seals out. Do I need any special tools for this or perhaps I don't even need to replace these seals at all. Please give me some advices on this. Thanks in advance for your idea and time. |

I looked up the relevant chapters on the servicecd and zipped the pdfs for you to take a look at.
They give a good idea of the work involved but don't be frightened by all the special tools they use, 9 times out of 10 they are easily replaced by some elbow grease and your favourite cussword

Rear differential for 89 300E
Thanks per, I received your pdf files and it looks very informative. I'll probably have to go buy a few more tools and maybe try to do it this weekend if weather permits and I'll let you all know how it goes. Also, where can I buy the 13mm hex bit for the drain nut on the rear differential. I'm afraid I don't have the right tools???

How to replace pinion seal for rear differential for 89 300E
I replaced 2 radial seals on the rear differential, but now I need to know how to replace the pinion seal before putting this rear differential into the car. Does any one has any infor on this? It looks like I'll need some special tool for this ? I thank you in advance for all your help. Thanks

Unless it is leaking, leave it alone. You will have to remove the pinion flange and retainer nut, which will kill the bearing preload on the pinion shaft. Torque and position of these components is critical to proper rear end setup and clearances. Don't fix it if it "ain't" broke.

I completed sucessfully
Thankyou all for everything, the emails, faxes with very helpful infor. I replaced all 3 seals before putting in the rear differential. Everything went well. The gear oil plug required a 14mm hex bit and I couldn't find it at Sears, so I end up buying a 14mm bold from the hardware store and bend it to use as a tool. Anyway, the rear differential works good now. Thanks again everyone!
