Squeak noise near shift selector
I have a 1991 420 SEL with about 75,000 miles. Recently started a squeaking noise around the area of the selector lever while driving. If I put hand pressure on the lever, the noise stops. It's driving me nuts!! I'm sure that it needs a drop of lubricant somewhere in that area.
I already removed the center console around the selector lever and oiled up the base of the lever, but to no avail. Still squeaks.. I also have the maintenance information on CD ROM, but cannot find anything dealing with the assembly of the transmission selector lever or anything in that area that would give me a clue as to where to lubricate. Any ideas anyone????? Other than that, I love this car... Bob Irving Charlotte, NC (704)882-2272 |
There is one (or more) plastic shifter bushings that is causing the squeak. I had the same thing happen years ago on my W124 (and holding the lever suppressed the squeak).
The bushing(s) should be inexpensive. Had it done by the dealer then, so I can't tell you how to go about the repair...sorry. |
Simple fix...
