Shifter is stuck

I have a '97 C230. When I try to shift from "D" to "4" (lateral right to left), the shifter is stuck. I doesn't matter if the car is in motion or not. I don't want to force it too much, I'm afrraid of beaking something. Any thoughts on why this may be occuring?

thanks.

The shifter needs to be removed and inspected. i've had a few shifters of this approximate age have damage. fairly sure it's going to need the shifter assm.

How much can I expect to pay for this type of repair?

Well, the tech is going to decide if it needs the shifter or not. i priced out a whole new shifter at about $350, and I would guess about 1 hour of labor to install, the tech probably will want some diagnostic time, I'd say an hour of diagnosis would be about right.

Another question...

There's no problem at all when shifting from park to drive. And I rarely (if ever) shift when I put it into drive. Therefore, is there any harm in just leaving it the way it is?

thanks again.

Is the transmission operating properly otherwise? I have observed a "locking" of the shifter in limp-home mode of the 722.6. Not sure if that's the way it's supposed to work, but it did it.

It works like it always has, no difference at all. The shift from Park to drive is smooth and effortless, but is just will not shift beyond that point. BTW, this problem just didn't appear. Going from D to 4 got progressively stiffer over time; now it just won't go. Also, when I could get it into 4, gears 4 to 1 would shift without any problem.

Talking Update

I took the car to the shop for the 132000Km service and asked them to take a look at the shifter. In the end, all it needed was some lubrification; no parts were replaced and it works like new.
