Guys, I hope I don't jinx myself but I am starting to think the rough idle & check engine light was the result of washing my engine. It hasn't done it in a while now and I'm guessing that water got into a a bad spot but it's dried up now. I haven't done anything to the car since (no spark plug or wire changes)and I'll just keep an eye on things.

So in the future if I want to clean the engine, what's the safest way to do it?

The safe way would be to clean the valve cover by hand.
If you do use water, cover the valve cover with something to keep the water away.
These engines are prone to water shorting the plug ends because the cover for the coils/wires/plugs is not water tight and the plugs are at the very bottom of the head casing. So any water winds up right at the plug cavity. And it stays there for some time.

You may also want to change the 3 coil to plug resistor boot
ends under each coil as they are known to deteriorate from heat
fatique and cause a rough idle and plug mis-fire.
The plug ends on the other 3 plugs don't seem to suffer from this as they breath better not being trapped by the coils.
They are about $8 ea. and easy to replace...

Angry 1997 c280 'check engine'

last week the dealer replace the cameshaft seal. the next day the engine light came on. I didn't take it to the dealer because I' was afraid it can cost me big$$ so I disconnected the battery and wait a minutes or so reconnect the battery and the light went away. Then a week later the 'check engine' light came on again.
can anybody tell me are there any self checking code on this car?
Will i damage anything if i ignore the light? anyone have any suggestion?

Thank

john
