I'm sure this one had been experienced by many people driving an MB. You step on the accelerator and your auto-transmission didn't want to shift smoothly from second-third, instead it revs up and shifts to third abruptly and then shifts to 4th also abruptly. Sometimes you have to aid the shifting with your accelerator foot to smoothen out the gear shift. What causes this?

If the fluid level is OK then you possibly have serious trans. problems. Sounds like one of the clutch packs ars worn, sorry. Have a qualified technician check it out.
