1990 Mercedes 560 SEL Transmission Issues - Need some help!!!
Good evening all,
I have a 1990 Mercedes 560 SEL with 221,000 miles. I've had trouble with the reverse on the transmission. The reverse is shot, while all of the forward gears work great. The question I have is about the repair to the reverse clutches. Does anyone close to me do the repair? How much would it cost? Am I better off having the entire transmission rebuilt? Maybe someone close to Richmond, VA might have a good used unit? Pleade, I'm open to all suggestions. Thanking you in advance for your help... Ron Richmond, Virginia 23220

One data point on MB transmissions is how fast reverse engages.
They engage slower and slower as the clutches wear. Once you lose reverse, especially at your mileage, it's time to rebuild transmissions. Without knowing the history of your transmission, 221K miles is a reasonable amount of mileage from an original transmission that lacks a complete history of fluid changes and gentle driving. Last time I priced them, rebuilds are in the 1200-1400 dollar range. and you need to get the torque converter as well, to get any kind of warranty. Jim
