spongy brakes
 

Car: The car is a 1987 300D turbo.

Problem: When braking, the pads squeal, and when I am about to stop, the abs kicks in or something and the petal gets spongy.

I changed the master cylinder and power blead the brakes with Ate brake fluid. That didnt help.

I got the mercedes cleaning pads with sand paper and I sanded the rotors in the front. It fixed the squeeling problem and the spongy problem for two weeks. Now the brakes become spongy. The pads are fairly new (2k miles) they are jurid. I didnt replace the rotors when I did the pads, but the rotors seemed good. After I cleaned the rotors, I put the Jurid pads back in, and put some Anti-squeal compound on, and now its back again.

Would the squeeling cause the abs sensor to rattle and then make the abs pump turn on?

What should I do considering I replaced the master cylinder already?

Squealing is apparently very common when non-OEM pads or discs are used on MBs

what you're explaining is a common complaint. yes the squealing pads will send an abs impulse.jurid is an oe brand along with textar. you've done all the steps to remidy the problem(anti squeal solution,scuff rotors) the next step is rotor replacement.

Ihad squeeling brakes when I first got my car. I found that the disc was actually loose. I tightened it down with the little allen bolt, and it stopped the squeek.

I too thought that I had the ABS kicking in. After I made the adjustment, the cars braking was much smoother.

Thank you all for your input. I tightened the allen bolt and the abs kicking in stopped, but the pads still squeal. They do have anti-squeal compound on them, but I don't think that it is helping.

I am glad that the abs kicking in has stopped, but how do I get rid of the squeal?

I read about ate power discs on the search, but it seems most of the posts were from a few years ago. Does anyone have any new suggestions? I am mainly looking for non-squeaking pads, and no problems with the abs.

I have ATE discs and ATE pads. All is well on my car.

Do you have the shims behind the pads? If not, that might help.

Also I assume the pads are completely coated on the backs right?

I always coat mine fully, and use the shims that are there.

I do not have any squeaking problem.

What pads are you using now?

Do your discs have a lip on the outer edge?

If so, I would think about replacing the rotors and pads with new ones. I had a lip on my old discs, and my pads were earing quickly, and I had a bit of a squeal. Changing both seemed to aleviate that.

Alon, tried tightening bolt
 

Alon, I tightened the bolt, and then i torqued the wheels to 90 ftlbs. The sqealing was still there, but the abs didnt kick in, so it fixed it for about a day.

The pulsating and the sqealing is still there. The rotors in the front have a little lip, hardly noticible. The pads are fairly new (2k miles), but I did not change the rotors when I changed the pads.

Do you have any other ideas for this problem?

If I buy new rotors and pads, what is your recommendation?

The rears seem pretty good still, should I replace the rotors and pads all the way around.

What are your new suggestions?

Also, my W123 brakes are squealing. No abs problems because I dont have ABS, any suggestions for that. I have cleaning pads for front and rear for the W123 too.

like I said in my previous post I deal with this problem almost on a daily basis and so do most dealerships. I always get the best results by using textar pads with anti squeal solution on the pad and antisieze on the backs and edges of the pad.that 5mm allen doesn't do anything but keeping the disc from falling on your foot when you remove the lug bolts and calper.good luck...paul
