A/C compressor running but no cold air?
 

Greetings All,

I must be overlooking something on my wifes '86 300E as the a/c compressor runs without fail but the air entering the dash vents remains warm. What's the deal? Is the venting system not working or what? I felt the lines leaving the compressor and they weren't ice cold or even cold but luke warm. I would think that if freon was the problem the compressor would not operate at all unless it's defective freon or some PO substitute. Any and All input and ideas are welcomed before we really get into the heat and she wants to take my ice cold 300SD to work instead.

It's fairly common on these models for the mono-water valve (heater valve) to fail and allow warm air in along with an operating A/C system. Results in a no-A/C complaint. It's possibly just a torn diaphragm in the valve, which is available seperately.

Can you explain the luke warm compressor exit?

Thanks for responding to my question, but wouldn't the solid aluminum pipe leaving the compressor still be ice cold or at least cold going to the evaporator? Mine going in the compressor is extremely hot and just somewhat cool to warm coming out. The outside temp is around 70 degrees F. Would that be affected by the monovalve as well?

Ah, yes, you're right, I missed that part. The low pressure line (the larger diameter lines) should be getting at least cool to the touch. maybe it has just enough pressure yet to run the compressor, but not enough to really cool anything. I'd go along that route first. Have the A/C system pressure checked and have it filled and checked for leaks.

My AC got warm and wasn't cooling effectively.

I had it drained and recharged. Cold AC again.

Your freon could be low.
